My school year

- My school year -

This year has probably been my worst school year. I feel like I did nothing, I didn't get very good grades and I didn't study very much. Every single day was boring for me: in the morning I was only thinking about the end of the school day.
Now the school year is almost over and I'm a little bit worried about debts, I've never got a debt in my school life, but now I'm surely going to get at least one of it. I wasn't willing to do anything.
During this year of school nothing special did happen, it was the same boring school year; I just hope that next year is going to be better and I'm going to work and study a lot more. ( <- that is a lie)

The Eyeborg

Meet the Eyeborg

Rob Spence is a Canadian documentary maker also known as "the Eyeborg" because he has a camera in his right eye, which he lost after an accident with a gun. His best-known documentary is "Deus Ex: the Eyeborg documentary" in which he uses his eye-camera to interview people with prosthetic limbs. This documentary has been produced with the collaboration of the makers of the videogame: "Deus Ex: Human revolution". Rob thinks that in a non-distant future we will live two times longer as we do now, thanks to prosthetic limbs or bio-mechanical organs. His theory is really interesting because of the fact that scientists nowadays are working on an intelligent-arm-system that can replace an amputated limb. Who knows what the future will deserve us?

  • Title: Meet the Eyeborg
  • Who: Rob Spence
  • When: 2008
  • What: His right eye
  • Why: Because he lost it after an accident
  • How: By replacing it with a camera

Bat Country

Bats!

The city of Austin (see the picture above) has an original tourist attraction: bats. These bats fly every day upon the Congress Avenue Bridge giving people a spectacular view. Nowadays there are more bats than people in this town. During the 1980s the city restored its main bridge offering bats a safe place to sleep. Every evening from March to November over than a million bats cross the bridge, this "show" lasts an hour. In the past people considered them mortal and dangerous animals, but now the National Association of bat protection resolved everything, in fact, those animals eat between 5000-10.000 Kgs of insects each day and people consider them harmless and helpful.

  • Who/what: People-bats

London's cab shelter

London's cab shelter

During the Victorian Era in the streets of London you could find these compact green huts built in order to offer cabbies a place where they could get hot meals and drinks. At the time was illegal for a driver to leave the vehicle unattended and he would have to pay someone else to watch his horse and cab. The idea to build a dedicated shelter for cabbies was the brainchild of an ex-soldier: Captain Armstrong. On a cold winter's day in 1875 he sent out his assistant into a blizzard only to find that all the drivers were getting drunk in a local pub and were unable to drive. So a furious Cpt. Armstrong decided to set up the Cabmen's shelter fund on February 6th, 1875. This fund provided cabbie drivers with: a shelter, food and drinks at reasonable prices. In total were built 61 shelters between 1875-1882. Unfortunately today only 13 cab shelters are still "alive" since a large number of them were destroyed by nazis during the blitz of the Second World War.

Letter to a friend

Via Napoli, 60
81034 Mondragone
11th December, 2013

Dear Margaret,
last Monday we went in Caserta to see a concert about "The Beatles", this concert was
organised by our magnificent English teacher La Torre. It was a school trip so we went by bus, we were five classes and we had a lot of fun. By the way the best part was the concert. There were a lot of people inside the theatre and all of them were waiting to see the show. It started with a background voice and images on the screen. This background voice told us a little bit of "The Beatles" story before the show started. Suddenly all the lights turned off and the actors started to sing the most famous Beatles' song. It was amazing and interesting at the same time. The show lasted two hours. After it we returned home by bus, we were really excited for that show and for the actors.
What about you? Did you go somewhere interesting last week?
Let me know.
Kisses,
Antonio

Banksy the street artist

Banksy is an anonymous English writer. All we know about him is that he was born in Bristol and he started to write when he was 14 years old. He's considered the most famous "street writer" in the world. His career started in small crew called DryBreadZ with two of his artist friends in the 80's. Many years later he organised the first convention of graffiti writers in Bristol, he really had a lot of success, after that year he became one of the most known writers in Europe. Even after 39 years he's still doing his wonderful, full of significance drawings. Banksy also sells his works to the Hollywood stars, such as Brad Pitt, for a really high price. His most famous work is "Consumism Water Lily Pond" which represents Monet's masterpiece with a shopping trolley and a traffic cone into it.

Here is the original one.           Here is the "consumism" one.
